How Can I Search for God?

God wants to be found..

Is there a way to find God? There’s no exact formula or set of steps — but here’s the good news: God is already searching for you, and He wants to be found.

If you’re beginning a spiritual journey or simply curious about faith, below are some practical steps to help you explore and encounter God for yourself.

“Ask and it will be given to you; SEEK AND YOU WILL FIND; knock and the door will be opened to you” Matthew 7:7

How can I encounter God for myself?

Start with Prayer

Begin by speaking honestly to God. You don’t need fancy words — just speak from the heart. Ask God to reveal Himself to you, even if you’re unsure He’s there. Share your questions, your doubts, your fears and hopes. Prayer is where a relationship with God begins.

Look to Jesus

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. The Bible describes Jesus as “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). His life, words, and actions offer the clearest picture of God’s heart, character, and love for humanity.

Read the Bible

The Bible isn’t just an ancient book — it’s a record of people’s encounters with God throughout history. Everything in it ultimately points to Jesus. Start with one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John) to discover who He is.

Use Your Mind and Heart

Faith isn’t about switching off your brain. Quite the opposite. Explore the big questions with curiosity and honesty. As the author Brian McLaren once wrote, “The search for faith cannot bypass the intellect.” But don’t forget your heart — God invites you into relationship, not just knowledge.

Stay Open

Our background, experiences, and assumptions can all shape how we respond to spiritual truths. Stay open to new ideas and be willing to rethink what you’ve believed before. If God is real, He is bigger than any box we try to put Him in.

Ask Honest Questions

Don’t be afraid to question things. Truth can stand up to scrutiny. Write your questions down, especially those about Jesus and the Bible. Explore them with people of faith, in a discussion group, or even by contacting one of our team confidentially. We’re here to walk with you.

Investigate Faith

Read widely. Explore websites, books, articles, and podcasts. Ask those who follow Jesus what’s helped them understand faith more clearly. Everyone’s journey is unique, but you don’t have to search alone.

Talk to Christians You Respect

Seek out people who genuinely live out their faith. Ask them how they came to believe, what challenges they’ve faced, and how they continue to grow. Real stories of faith often shine brighter than arguments.

Keep a Journal

Writing things down helps. Record your thoughts, questions, discoveries, and moments of clarity. Your spiritual search is personal — treat it like a journey worth documenting.

Spend Time in Nature

Creation often points us to the Creator. The Bible says that by observing the natural world, people have glimpsed something of God’s eternal power and divine nature (Romans 1:20). Go for a walk. Take time to be still. Listen and reflect.

Make Time for the Search

Spiritual things can easily be pushed aside in our busy lives. Set aside time — maybe an hour a week — to explore, pray, read, or talk with others. Give your spiritual journey the attention it deserves.

Reflect and Respond

As you explore faith, you’ll be faced with decisions. What do you make of Jesus’ claims? What might it mean if they’re true? You don’t need every answer to make a start. Faith involves trust — and it often grows as we take steps forward.

You don't have to search alone!!

Whether you’ve only just begun searching for God or you’re returning after some time away, questions are part of the process. There’s always more to discover. And remember — you're not searching alone.

Jesus once said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). That’s His promise — and here at WEF, we very much believe it still holds true.
